SUBJECT: wireless access point + bridge thing

I have this WAP + bridge (combined) and I know that it's supposed to be wireless B/G. So, i was hoping it would work when i chose to connect to it i windows xp sp2 (ghastly thing) and i click 'default', its name, and even though it has maximum strength signal, i click connect and it just either keeps saying 'waiting for the network...' or no box pops up and the window refreshes. The reason i'm asking you guys about it is because when I connect it (via ethernet) to linux, it still doesn't connect wirelessly. I've added it to my MAC filtering table (on my modem/router)as an allowed device but i dont know how to make it connect to my router. It's edimax one that i bought for £50. Help!!! FYI my pc has no ethernet card/port and is at the opposite end of the house. I've tryed putting the WAP/bridge next to my PC AND my modem/router. my modem/router is wifi 'b' and my pc is wifi 'b'.
