It's a clever move, had sony been more clever, they would have done it first.
Holding/controlling patents and licensing gives you competitive advantage over others. As a matter of fact, some companies take a technology and patent it and _never_ license it out or even market it themselves just because that technology has the ability to obsolete one of their existing products. So a better product is blocked because a company wants to continue selling their inferior product at high profit.
That's just the way it goes.
