Summary:Kernel 2.4.17
Hi everyone,
So - you may have noticed that there is a new subsection in my files list, entitled Kernel 2.4.17. This is the "BroadBand Navigator" ported kernel. I have been using this kernel for a while, and have achieved some success with it.
In fact, I'm using it to generate builds right now.
It seems to speed up Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird slightly. I attribute that to better swapfile management, and the moving of certain networking code into the kernel. It works great with X Windows, too. If you're using your PlayStation 2 primarily as a X Windows workstation, you should check this out.
However - it breaks major portions of the low level PlayStation 2 development libraries. So, if you're using the PlayStation 2 for game development, this isn't the kernel for you.
Also - it doesn't work well with the Linux kit network adaptor. You have to use the newer network adaptor - the one with the Ethernet and Modem jacks - or you'll crash the kernel.
And - it's fully untested and unsupported. It may do all sorts of bad things - it's impossible to say at this point.
Therefore - it's not quite ready for prime time, but as long as you know what you're doing, it's fun to play with. I've placed all the information I've accumulated - including how I built the kernel cross-platform - in this project.
HOWEVER - and I must stress this - You will receive no support from me!!!. If you feel uncomfortable with advanced kernel hacking - stay away!!!.
You are more than welcome to post questions in the Mozilla for PlayStation 2 Forums, and I will endeavor to answer them - but I don't guarantee an answer.
Cheers,
Paul
