File Sharing Between Windows and PS2Linux Using Samba HOWTO

This document will describe step by step information how to setup files sharing between windows and ps2linux

Preparation

First thing first you have to have samba package install form the disc 2 of the Linux for Playstation2. The second most important thing is you have to a smbfs (samba file system) module in your PS2Linux system. There are 2 ways to install smbfs module :

Easy-Way : Grab a copy of smbfs.o from 'Compiled For Your Convinience' projects.
Hard-Way but much more challenging :) : Re-compile kernel and enable the smbf module from the kernel options. Kernel recompile can take up to 1 hour in PS2Linux. For more information to recompile kernel go to Kernel HOWTO

If you already done all of the above, then we are set to do a file sharing. For making things easier, I will make name examples to represent the operating system and user:

'linbox' will be the hostname of the PS2Linux machine
'winbox' will be the hostname of the windows machine
'joe' will be my user example who has an account in PS2Linux machine.

PS2Linux Setup

In the PS2Linux there are 2 files to edit: smb.conf and hosts. Both of them is located in /etc. First edit the /etc/hosts file using vi or pico so it will look something like this

Now save the default smb.conf first : cp /etc/smb.conf /etc/smb.conf.saved. Using the default smb.conf will work, however i like my own configuration better and it looks like this:

Windows Setup

You have to setup IP addr, netmask, workgroup, share drive and login method for the windows machine:

Set IP addr to 192.168.0.2, netmask to 255.255.255.0 and disable WINSResolution

Windows 98/ME	Right-click on Network Neighborhood/My Network Place and choose properties Click on TCP/IP for your ethernet card and click properties Fill in IP addr and netmask written above
Windows 2000/XP	Right-click on My Network Place and choose properties Right-click on your 'Local Area Connection' connection icons and choose properties. Click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' and click properties Fill in IP addr and netmask written above and leave the gateway blank Set DNS for automatic configuration

Set the computer name to 'winbox' and workgroup as 'MSHOME'. You don't have to use workgroup=MSHOME, change it to soemthing else if you want to and don't forget to change it at /etc/smb.conf.

Windows 98/ME	Right-click on Network Neighborhood/My Network Place and choose properties Click on the 'Identification' tab on the top Enter your computer name and workgroup as above
Windows 2000	Right-click on My Computer and choose properties Click on the 'Network Indentification' tab on the top Click on 'Network ID' button Enter your computer name and workgroup as above
Windows XP	Right-click on My Computer and choose properties Click on the 'Computer Name' tab on the top Click on 'Change' button Enter your computer name and workgroup as above

Set the logon type and sharing properties

Windows 98/ME	Right-click on Network Neighborhood/My Network Place and choose properties Change the 'Primary Network Logon' to 'Client for Microsoft Networks' Click on 'File and Print Sharing' and tick 'I want to be able to give others access to my file'
Windows 2000/XP	Already set by default, doesn't have to do anything else

Set a share name for hard drive

Windows 98/ME	Double click 'My Computer' Right click on C drive and choose 'Sharing' Set the Share Name as 'C' and the approriate access control
Windows 2000	Double click 'My Computer' Right click on C drive and choose 'Sharing' Set the Share Name as 'C' and the approriate access control
Windows XP	Double click 'My Computer' Right click on C drive and choose 'Sharing and Properties' Set the Share Name as 'C' and the approriate access control

Restart windows :)
For Windows 98/ME after restarting an login box will appear, put the login name as joe and leave the password field blank. For windows 2000/XP login as normal using your current login.

Testing Connection and Mounting Windows Drive in PS2Linux

In your PS2Linux prompt :

Become root by typing 'su' or login as root
Type 'samba start'
Type 'smbclient -L linbox' , enter the root password and you should have something like this:

If you get an output similar like that you're on the right track :) Now what you can do is to mount the drive in windows to your PS2Linux:

Type 'mkdir /mnt/c'
Type 'mount -t smbfs -o username=root,password=passhere //winbox/c /mnt/c' Please note in //winbox/c, 'c' is the sharename of windows harddrive that we set in the previous section. If you set the sharename to a different one, then don't forget to change it.
Type 'cd /mnt/c' , type 'ls' and whalaa......You can see your windows harddrive from PS2Linux :)

Accessing PS2Linux Files from Windows Machine

For windows ME/98 don't forget to put in the username 'joe' at the logon box, leave the password empty and click ok. Please note that user 'joe' must have a valid account in your PS2Linux machine. For windows NT/2000/XP, login as your normal login id and create a user in your PS2Linux with the same exact username as your windows NT/2000/XP.
Now after you login to windows:

Go to My Network Place/Network Neighbourhood
For windows 98 user you should see 2 icons that arelinbox and winbox. For other windows version, go to 'Entire Network', open 'MSHOME', and you should see 2 icons that are linbox and winbox.
Double click on 'linbox', put the password that user 'joe' use to login to PS2Linux, and you should see a folder called 'home'. when you open it, you can see your home directory(/home/joe) in your PS2Linux.
Now you can transfer file to your PS2Linux from your windows machine :)

You can mount this home directory at PS2Linux in your windows. Just right-click on folder 'home' under icon 'linbox', choose 'Map Network Drive', tick 'Reconnect at Logon' and click OK. The next time you turn on your windows machine in My Computer or Windows Explorer you can see a drive called 'Home at Linbox'. You can access it from there without going to Network Neighborhood/My Network Place again.
